New Years Eve Music Shows 2010

Posted on 21:38 by Unknown

Well considering the truly awful round-up from last years shows this year couldn't possibly be any worse and low and behold it wasn't even close. I flipped back and forth between all the shows and Canada's show from Niagra Falls was pretty awful each time I was there. The big moment for the show seemed to be Great Big Sea according the rave-up by the hosts. They stunk up the joint quickly with some tepid Celtic infused folk rock. The band is one of those bands I just don't get nor do I want to honestly.

Then they had the Barenaked Ladies albeit missing Stephen Paige who is so much the band and without him as a member they haven't got a hope. The Niagra show was another dud and we will move on to the other Canadian network show. City TV had much more talent on their show but it was formatted for a younger crowd. The announcers were as expected fake over the top and stupid as they made predictable comments and tried to sound much younger than they actually are. Once the music started the show improved to be honest. Even though I'm not a fan of Shawn Desmond or Danny Fernandes they did their level best. The true moment that the show had was when the Stereo's were on screen performing. They did a great job in the cold working the crowd into a frenzy. The Chilliwacker's These Kids Wear Crowns also did a good job to sell their pop rock brand to country we live in and love.

The American networks have more talent always most of the performances are pre-recorded months in advance. Ryan Seacrest's show is the winner. They just had more and really some of their talent was surprisingly good. For me the show was stolen by the one song performance by La Roux. She was brilliant even with the many recorded elements. I enjoyed her freakish appearance and stage presence over everyone else. Ke$ha was as usual excellent and really taking a big chunk of Lady GaGa's throne claim as the next Madonna. She can sing live and her background vocalists are excellent. Mike Posner was pretty lame just singing his light R&B/pop music. Natasha Bedingfield was a highlight for sure and she's always solid performing. "Whip My Hair" by Willow Smith was fun and she's living her 15 minutes of fame so I'm ok with her and that annoying but catchy song. Ne-Yo, Derulo & Far East Movement were all decent as well.

Carson Daley had My Chemical Romance which was the highlight of all the shows for me (Na Na Na...). I love that band and the only thing that would have been better was if Weezer, Green Day and The Cult would have played greatest hits medley's. I also enjoyed the largest ass in Hip-Hop Nicki Minaj's performance but not so much that enormous Rump-a-sarous. All in all this years countdown show's stood up well. The music was better for the most part and that makes a huge difference and can balance out the awful hosts. Rick, Ryan & Carson were very good and I think Carson was the best of them all this year. The last mention goes to fellow Canadian Jimmy Fallon who's slow jam was funny and worth watching on Youtube if you missed it. Again the best of the night My Chemical Romance, La Roux, Ke$ha & The Stereo's who were all excellent in venues not conducive to good performances.

I wish that we could get the Rosa Parks Circle show from Grand Rapids Michigan. Their line-up is great with Good Charlotte, Runner Runner, Kaci Battaglia and We The Kings performing which will kick ass.

Bachman-Turner Overdrive - Trial By Fire: Latest & Greatest

Posted on 01:06 by Unknown

Searching through stuff I came across this best of record and couldn't remember it very well, gave it a listen and that inspired a review. The album kicks off with one of the worst covers of "House Of The Rising Sun" that you will ever hear. It's not just bad if bloody awful and really shouldn't be heard by anyone again. The album is a re-recording of their classics with a few new tunes. The new versions do not have the energy or aggression of the originals making this collection unworthy.

The complete murder of "Blue Collar" sounds like a bad bar band as neither Blair nor Bachman's replacement Randy Murray can pull off the songs jazzy passages. Fred's voice is still decent but he doesn't sound like he's really into this project. The Randy Bachman covers have terrible vocals and instead of just kicking supreme ass making a new version they try to stay the course. More bad bar band cover versions are available on the album with whomever singing Randy Bachman's parts. Fred's best moment here is on "Nothing Comes Easy" that is a pretty crushing tune and the only time the band sounds like they mean it. The closing number is a Gilley country rocker that would be comfortable on a Big & Rich or Brooks & Dunn album. Again Fred does a nice job on the tune and I have to admit if this was more of the album I would have been much more impressed.

Mr. Big - What If

Posted on 20:04 by Unknown

Well, well, well its official Mr. Big are back together in their best and original formation with the best guitarist on planet earth next to Steve Vai on guitar. Paul Gilbert returns to his former band along with Billy Sheehan who's stint with DLR made him a household name the underrated Pat Torpey on drums and Eric Martin on Vocals. This band has always been one of those rare groups that all of its parts were just a tad better standing alone than they were as a group. The debut album was good but not exactly what one would expect from such a talented supergroup. The follow-up though was a much more coheesive album even though it seemed to be controlled by Eric's vision and less of a musicians show piece.

This time What If... pulls it all together in a nice tight package allowing all the groups strongest attributes to shine brightly. The big production fuels the albums intensity as well as allows the more heartfelt emotional moments come through especially sweet. After many years of loving Paul Gilbert as a solo artist having him take a backseat on vocals is a little disappointing because I actually enjoy his quirky voice. Eric gets to be a little much sometimes but admittedly much less on this album. When the band drops the hammer down they prove that all the praise is deserved.

Song Highlights: Kill Me With A Kiss, Undertow, I Get The Feeling, Around The World & American Beauty

Crystal Bowersox - Farmer's Daughter

Posted on 19:29 by Unknown

Well the shrieking cow finally drops her album and upon first listen it wasn't nearly as bad as I expected it to be. The album opens up with a good song "Ridin' With The Radio" that should be a country hit and would be a good country floor filler in the dance halls of America & Canada. She then does a decent cover of an oft covered tune "For What It's Worth" that might also garner some radio attention. The big surprise here is that whomever is the mainline producer on the product figured out how to get her strongest vocal abilities out and toned down the over singing and that annoying shriek she was commended for on Idol for weeks upon weeks unfairly.

Now I'm not going to lie I don't want to like her music nor do I want to see her be successful but I'm a music fan first and when something is good I'm not going to say it sucks. The title track is ok albeit a little contrived but worthy of a listen as well. When the studio magic is put to work it really can help but many times on the album she hits that loud sharp note that makes my ears cringe and it almost makes my brain hurt. Part of that is she sings softly and then cracks that one word so much louder that it just stands out too far. But back to the songs she's obviously a CCM artist with many references to the big black book of bullshit, lies and hypocrisy.

The song "Lonely Won't Come Around" has a sweet intro but vocally Crystal is bland singing with no belief in the lyrics or the melody dancing around her voice. I do see this one getting used in a commercial but I don't think its radio ready. Her Elvis funk displayed on "On The Run" misses the mark because she doesn't have the charisma or soul to drive the song in the manner its needed to be successful. Her Janis Joplin blues moment comes the way of "Speak Now" an ok tune and she sounds pretty good here. I admit this song is radio worthy and deserving of being a hit song but will probably be dismissed because country radio would rather support garbage songs by faceless artists more so than something with a little substance.

The album includes a lot of filler material and poorly executed stuff and outside of the three I've pointed out this album is a miss. I do have to eat a little crow on this one because she is better than I thought and shouted from the roof tops. But three songs out of twelve does prove I was closer to right than wrong. A critical listener will agree with me and the ones who think she's great before even opening their ears will disagree but that's ok because you folks are all allowed to have your wrong opinions.

Tesla: One Of America's Best Ever

Posted on 17:19 by Unknown
When it comes to great American Rock N' Roll there is an abundance of songs and bands to talk about. But every once in awhile something happens and a band shows up that just has all the ingredients to make them great. Tesla is one of those special bands that have it all to bake the perfect rock n' roll cake. The band found vocalist Jeff Keith and then their name changed to the last name of the true inventor of the radio Nikola Tesla from that point forward it was time for the golden throated Keith to unleash his soul onto the world. The bands debut album and a fine one at that was released in 1986 called Mechanical Resonance which launched their stars. MTV picked up the video for debut single "Modern Day Cowboy" playing it in high rotation for a short while. The bands second single which was "Gettin' Better" one of the bands best highlights also garnered large amounts of MTV play along with radio play around the world.

Tesla was on their way and the bands third single "Little Suzie" which also brought the boys more success. Tesla seemed to be set up for world wide domination with their sophomore album. Frank Hannon and Tommy Skeoch had all the song writing talent any band would need as well the guitar chops to stand up in a genre that was known for stellar guitar playing. When you hear a solo as tasty as the one in "Little Suzie" you can't deny their abilities. The band toured extensively and then launched The Great Radio Controversy and album that took the band right to the top allowing them to headline arena's.

This was the album that gave us, if not the greatest power ballad of all-time its definitely in the top five. "Love Song" was the bands second single after the wickedly cool acoustic guitar slide and gritty groove of "Heaven's Trail (No Way Out)" which is one of the bands most satisfying music moments. The album went to eighteen on the The Billboard 200 albums chart and included another defining career moment with the brilliant "The Way It Is" which is even a better tune than "Love Song" but didn't catch fire like the latter did. From here all Tesla needed to put them over the top was another successful radio single and boy oh boy did that happen. The band released the live album Five Man Acoustical Jam proving that they were the real deal. Not only was their studio output better than nearly all their peers of the day but the band could pull it off live just as good if not better.

The band's cover of Canadian group Five Man Electrical Band's "Signs" turned Tesla into a household name forever cementing them a place in regular rotation on classic rock radio. "Signs" became the song every drunken long haired rocker sang loud and proud or blasted from their muscle cars stereos. If your unfamiliar with Tesla go get the album and do your ears a service by listening to some of the greatest music ever created. The bands choice of cover songs were also great proving that they knew what it was they were doing all the time. The rollicking cover of "Mothers Little Helper" is almost better than "Signs" and you won't miss the Stones at all. When the band had to follow all this success with new material they didn't melt under the creative pressure they actually returned with an album of songs as good as all the stuff that made them famous.

Psychotic Supper hit the store shelves in 1991 to critical acclaim. The album opens with a gang chant of 'Put This In Your Pipe And Smoke It!' then proceeds to kick some groovy ass for 3:37 only to give way to more bluesy guitar wanking and more epic rock n' roll. This album was pure gold albeit I'm not a huge fan of "Song & Emotion" sorry Steve. When track four arrives its a needed slow down where Jeff's voice just sends shivers down ones spine with his incredible delivery. The song "Call It What You Want" another great writing effort from Brian Wheat who is one of the bands writers and bass player extraordinaire. He's shamefully good but understated and tasteful all the time and I apologize for not mentioning his creative input sooner. The albums closing number "Let's All Toke About It" shines brightly as one of the bands brightest moments on record.

By this time some serious alcohol issues had come to light with the usual drug bullshit as well but the band somehow stayed true long enough to write and record what is my favorite Tesla album of all Bust A Nut the boys put a heavier more aggressive production on the uptempo number while brightening and tightening the ballads. Listen to the opening track "The Gate/Invited" and you will hear a darker Led Zeppelin punch instantly. They never lose their sound as the song breaks away into a sweet pre-chorus then a very Tesla chorus. Track two is about as metal as Tesla has ever been on "Solution" which has over the years become my second favorite of their career. When Tesla drops a power ballad on Bust A Nut they are five star songs out classing anything the genre had produced before. I could go on in-depth about how far the band took their sound and how amazing this album is but really hearing it yourself will be the only way to understand its brilliance and what makes it one of the best albums in history. Now the best song they ever wrote "Wonderful World" and their definitive cover of Joe South's "Games People Play" are both here as well so make sure you don't miss these two especially. Not much rock music can compete with them.

After a break of six years, the Sacramento Bee reported that the band had reformed in 2000 with the help of local radio personality Pat Martin of KRXQ. The band played an emotional sold out show at The Arco Arena in Sacramento on October 25, 2000. Soon after they recorded the double live album Replugged Live In 2002 they were featured in the Rock Never Stops Tour alongside other 1980s rock bands. In 2004 Tesla returned with a new studio album akin to Nut called Into The Now which debuted at the thirty spot on the Billboard album chart. On this album they took the more metallic approach to loftier heights and instead of sounding old or out of date they were just as relevant and modern as the younger bands making kids ears bleed on modern rock radio. The bands niche of power ballad genius is ever present with "Caught In A Dream" and "Come To Me" which should have been a major single success for them.

Tesla's decision to record back to back cover albums might have been a mistake but both turned out to include some serious gems. On Reel To Reel Vol. 1 they owned "Thank You", "Stealin'" and "Day Of The Eagle" but struggled to achieve success on others like "Hand Me Down World" and "Space Truckin'". Then volume 2 arrived with a pretty similar fate hitting it right with "Shooting Star", "I Want To Take You Higher" and "Seasons Of Wither" but missing completely on "Is It My Body" and sorry Jeff but lacking vocally on "Not Fragile" but the band really showed up on the latter track.

Now with Tommy Skeoch still MIA Forever More appeared in 2008 continuing this more thunderous Tesla sound which fits perfectly in the music climate of today. The band include much more uptempo rockers on this album which might put off some of their longtime fans but I actually enjoy this new Tesla powerhouse. They still drop a power ballad or two of decent caliber and one excellent purely classic tune called "Fallin' Apart" that again can stand up to all their best material. Wheat, Hannon & Keith never disappoint and with a catalog as great as they have been a part of building you'd think they would be one of those bands that sells out arena's and headlines classic rock festivals but alas another truly talented and worthy band are unjustly relegated to theater and casino status. If you have an ear for hard rock with emotion, power and near perfect to a fault then this is your band. Tesla will forever be one of America's greatest bands even if I'm the only one who thinks so.

The Last Vegas - Whatever Get's You Off

Posted on 22:27 by Unknown

This band is still working hard to break through into the mainstream but sadly nobody is giving them their well deserved break. I was checking out a music blog came across them liked their glam look so checked into their music. Bloody good thing I did because this band kicks serious ass! They are the bastard child of Cinderella and Motley Crue heavily influenced by their close cousins Hinder and Buckcherry and older brother Whitestarr. This band is everything all rock fans need in their ears. The bands songwriting is simple and effective with some brilliant hooks from song to song.

Song Highlights: Cherry Red, Whatever Get's You Off, High Class Trash, White Lies, Loose Lips, Love Me Bad & Apologize

Plain White T's - Wonders Of The Younger

Posted on 16:04 by Unknown

A late year release for Plain White T's and one that should be on your list. The band nearly erased everything "Hey There Delilah" built for them when they recorded the follow-up Every Second Counts trying not to be pigeon holed into that songs structure. But then a couple more years later they figured out how to encompass their career making hit single with a delicious blend of power pop and folk rock elements. The bands latest is a wonderful slice of pop rock that if nothing else makes you feel good while its playing. Overall the album is strong and the filler isn't nearly as noticable on Wonders Of The Younger. The choice to include "Welcome To Mystery" from the Alice In Wonderland OST album Almost Alice was excellent as its such a great song. This is a winner and worth a purchase for yourself and all fans of power pop on your holiday shopping list.

Song Highlights: Rhythm Of Love, Broken Record, Map Of The World, Body Parts, Make It Up As You Go, Irrational Anthem, Our Song & 1, 2, 3, 4

Motorhead - The World Is Yours

Posted on 23:07 by Unknown

The return of the Lemmy and his cohorts is a pretty strong return. The band sound great and Lemmy's voice has even improved, ok that's not true I'm just more used to hearing him now. The album is good though and one of the bands better albums over the years. When the guys cook they are doing it with gas for sure and when they miss the boat oh boy its like the titanic. But if your a fan then buy it, if your a metal or punk rock fan then again buy it.

Song Highlights: Born To Lose, I Know How To Die, Devils In My Hand, Rock N' Roll Music & Bye Bye Bitch Bye Bye

Christmas Music Shopping Suggestions 2010

Posted on 13:24 by Unknown
This month of November in the year 2010 we have been given an awful lot of new music. Some of its been reviewed by myself here and some of it has been ignored as well. Others have just been skipped over because of too much and not enough time to listen to it. I do try to listen to everything but sometimes it gets lost in the shuffle and with the amount of new music out right now I've missed some stuff.

It would be nice to see a lot more releases around August/September/October which would give everyone more time to decide who gets which album for the holiday gift swapping plus spread out the music to give it a much more fair chance to be successful. Good bands like The Bees are invisible in a saturated release market like November has been. Not to mention excellent albums like Between Two Lungs by Florence & The Machine are forgotten because all the promotion for the latest stuff that's dropped each week this month. Another issue I've come across is that little to no promotion for artists who are a little outside the mainstream pop market. Laurent Wolf, Elin Lanto & Ben Folds who all have current releases but have had to survive with very little effort into their albums.

As always with music though the best stuff gets hosed in favor of the ones who sell millions upon millions of singles and albums. You won't see much promotion or support for the brilliant new Doobie Brothers album or the excellent Bleeker Ridge record which will be long forgotten come December buying takes hold. But in the last month and over the previous ten some awesome stuff from all genre's has been released.

Here is my list of albums not to pass by, you can gift these to those music lovers in your shopping list. Now some of the selections will be those high profile releases because they deserve to be here for being good albums. There will be a few you won't recognize but a quick search online should get you enough listening samples to allow a definition of style and genre.
