Bruce Springsteen - Wrecking Ball

Posted on 00:01 by Unknown
Here is another album from one of America's most overrated artists. I don't agree with the idea that Springsteen is one of the greatest rockers ever. His stuff is mostly folk music with some pop stuff tossed in and some alt. country music as well. Here we have Wrecking Ball his latest piece of work which has him reaching for his Born To Run sound while keeping his so called modern sound. The opening song is just another Bruce tune that goes absolutely nowhere new and lacks a memorable chorus.

His style then takes a Celtic turn I guess he suddenly became Irish or Scottish and had to teach all about Irish folk music as he chants "Shackled & Drawn" another song I've heard a thousand times by many artists. The true epic crap appears in the form of "Jack Of All Trades" another CCM song from the reborn christian USA. It makes me wonder if the world trade centre's attack was a concerted attempt to drive the dwindling religious followers numbers up and bring back American's to the church. This song has the sad clown parade beat which will probably end up on some TV shows ending sequence this year.

The Irish folk music returns on "Death To My Hometown" oh yeah baby more shitty Celtic music written by an egotistical republican from New Jersey. This is so what the music world needed in 2012 NOT! The whole you stole my jobs and I'm poor now and sad and it's your fault I feel that way theme gets old really quick. I'm sure that this album will get all the critical acclaim and be touted as the voice of Americans blah freaking blah. If you have any self respect you will not support this manufactured bullshit. This is more manufactured than Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus and all the American Idol pop stars wrapped together.

There is not an ounce of me that finds this crap believable on any level this album sounds forced and plagiaristic. All Springsteen does it looks at what's happening in the news and such and then writes a bunch of songs that talks about the social issues and calls it art. That's not art that's called calculated research and manufacturing to play on peoples emotions getting them to buy your product. Now on a business level he's great he can suck the dollars out of a lot of stupid people's pockets with this terrible shit and good on ya Bruce. I can see through this falseness and I won't buy into the working mans band advertisement. Stay away from this shit and stop supporting such bad fucking music!

Accept - Stalingrad

Posted on 23:32 by Unknown
I'm sitting here listening to the new Accept album with the biggest smile I can muster. It is a continuation of their last album which is nothing but glorious in my opinion. I'm sure because it is a quick follow-up most won't hold it in as high regard as 2009's awesome Blood Of The Nations and I will agree that it isn't on the same level as songwriting goes overall. But this album is a kick ass metal air punching fest and that is why we are all listening to Accept.

The albums opening cut is a high energy rocker with a solid riff some good lead solo playing and solid vocals by Marc Tornillo. The title track albeit good does lack a little punch it is a little weak on the production side. The album grooves along with enough piss and vinegar to keep my metal heart beating loudly. I just find this version of the band so much more digestible and interesting than I ever did the original vocalist versions. The Saxon like "Flash To Bang Time" is one of those songs that gets better with volume. Stalingrad has enough good things going for it that if you were a fan of their last album you should find lots to love about this one. The only lacking thing is that the production differences on this record aren't as good as they were on Blood and that is most why it doesn't live up to Tornillo's debut with the band. I really enjoyed the last two tracks "The Quick & The Dead" and the closing track "The Galley" which for me will be added to my metal playlist and directed to my I-Pod immediately.

Klaatu - 347 E.S.T.

Posted on 17:47 by Unknown
I was listening to this Canadian oldie from 1976 and after listening the high quality rock music that played I was inspired to review the album or more so put a little spot light on a forgotten gem. The band were labeled a progressive rock band in the day but they were more of a sunshine pop group with progressive leanings.

This album had their hit "Calling Occupants (Of Interplanetary Craft)" which was the main reason I ever paid them attention. That song was immediately in my favorites list as a kid. The album also had "California Jam" which I'd always thought was a Hudson Brothers or Bay City Rollers track when I remembered it. The band somehow became this big issue because people thought it was The Beatles recording under a pseudonym. The big push was that "Sub-Rosa Subway" sounded like the greatest rock n' roll band of all-time. We all know that the choice of no band photo's or writing credits outside of the group name made the speculation even greater.

Years later we know this was not true and that doesn't change the fact that great Canuck rock like "True Life Hero" was on this great record from the mid 70's. Bands like Trooper, Doucette, April Wine all emulated this prototypical hard rock formula to great success in the 80's but all influenced by Klaatu's debut. The album breaks down do a degree into some hippy psychedelia with "Dr. Marvello" but their are some great harmonies and horn movements in the song that make it worth getting a copy to listen to on your hi-fi machine.

"Sir Bodsworth Rugglesby III" is most definitely Beatles inspired and could have been sung by Ringo with ease. The funny thing is that the lead vocal sounds like the giant muppet from the muppet show. Actually this song could have been a skit from the show at some point as it fits perfectly. 347 E.S.T. ends with "Little Neutrino" a symphonic master class ends what is about as flawless an album you can make with a production quality not heard in today's compressed digital world of thump and crunch pogo pop. Still if you enjoy avante-garde pop music this is one record you have got add to your collection because it deserves to be loved once again.

The Used - Vulnerable

Posted on 11:06 by Unknown
I was anticipating this album for awhile and with that said lets see if they lived up to said anticipation. The mentally agitated vocal melody of "I Come Alive" satisfies my ears completely then the running chorus drops into a dub-step breakdown of sorts which actually works to effectively drive the theatre of The Used. The band have always been more of a audio stage play than anything else and I think that's why I like them so much.

One thing that The Used has always had on their side is the “Tim Burton Sound”… There’s no real other way to explain it, but they have that creepy feeling that they can bring to anything… It provides a bit of suspense and mystery to each song. The band take that and completely rip off the door with ‘Put Me Out’ reminding me of everything that is great about The Used, with Bert McCracken’s screeching banshee vocals reaching out through a powerhouse of raw riffs and violent breakdowns.

This is the bands debut for their own label and if the band is to be successful they have to make sure this album does some seriously good business for them and their label. I think that the album is strong on many levels and is a better record than Artwork over all. It might be because they use some different stuff in the production and structure of the songs. The ebb and flow on Vulnerable is much greater but also much easier to accept while it plays through.

The One thing that pleasantly surprised me is that there’s an uplifting song on this album. Sure, it’s only one, but Bert McCracken has never been big on the empowerment so it’s a huge step. “Shine”, perhaps the only song by The Used I can say is genuinely inspirational, is my second favorite song on the album. The song also reminds me much of Panic! @ The Disco (wow two mentions in a row) and because I'm such a fan of that band I hear it plain as day on "Shine". The chorus is a powerful set of words delivered perfectly to get you up on your feet:

it's my time to shine, do it my way cuz it's my time baby
it's my time to burn, start a fire, be the one and only
I said it
I meant it
I never will forget it
change never happens by itself
it's my time to burn, my time to shine.
time to make it for myself.

One of the best songs on the album is another first for this band: honest-to-goodness alternative rock. “Moving On” is a masterpiece that combines the tone of bands like Good Charlotte with the more gritty feel of Rise Against, and it’s all wound together with McCracken’s distinct vocals. In order to fully grasp how unique this is for The Used, listen to “Empty With You” from Artwork (its closest counterpart) and then this song. The difference in tone is remarkable.

The Used have not always hit the nail on the head during their decade-spanning career, but 'Vulnerable' however, is their homecoming. Although not far removed from 'Artwork', this LP feels far more accomplished than their previous effort. From the force of 'Put Me Out' and 'Kiss It Goodbye' to the self-affirming moments in 'Shine' and 'Moving On', 'Vulnerable' places The Used firmly back on top of their game.

Electric Touch - Never Look Back

Posted on 10:36 by Unknown
A new band that Nickelback's facebook page posted about so I check them out. I'm sure glad I followed that advice because this band is pretty good. They are compatible to Panic! @ The Disco, JTX, Hedley & Good Charlotte with the pop side of Our Lady Peace as well.  Never Look Back kicks off with a manic "Don't Stop" which didn't grab me to be honest. But I kept going and was rewarded with "Beautiful Mess" a decent pop song that comes together with a good chorus and catchy enough hook.

As the album progresses their are hits and misses like the miss "Do It Again" that massages mediocrity and flatness to death. A good marching pop ballad "Alone" steps the quality back up to acceptable but still is a little light and doesn't manage to be much more than acceptable filler. The pleasant new wave of "All The Love" made my ears perk up right away. The song again achieves a little higher nearly being more than a filler track.

Where this album hits it right again is "Magnetic" which has everything you could want in this run of new wave/new romantic styled bands. Obviously they know who New Order and Duran Duran are once you listen to this song. The album continues with a couple of good tracks and a filler track and ends. Overall this isn't perfect but it has enough good stuff that you'll want to add those good tracks to your I-Pod.

American Idol's Billy Joel Journey

Posted on 22:10 by Unknown
The funny thing about this episode is that the singers are failing to emote the lyrics properly. Joshua was fucking terrible and the judges can say all the positive crap they want we all know that he was awful. The soulful and wonderfully understated version of "New York State of Mind" by Erika Van Pelt stands out huge in the sludge of Star Search singing on this seasons show.

There were some stunning falls and then there was Phil Phillips who DMB the shit out of "Moving Out" and drove home just how much better he is than every other contestant.  But then you see Colton arrive tonight with his unbelievable version of "Piano Man" that stole the show and brought up his stock. He proved his worth tonight and with the girls who are drooling over him and the milfs who are wet watching him sing as if he was doing only for them this guy is going nowhere this week.

Once again the country fire cracker does an average job but she's so cute and likable that I think she'll stay another week. If I was to pick the worst of the performances it would be a slam dunk for the bottom three being Deandre, Joshua and Hollie who all stunk the joint up. Now remember I'm a Canadian and we know talent where this is American Idol so with American's voting Phil, Colton and Erika could be the bottom three. America gets it wrong a lot on this show and thankfully the show steers the winners and losers to some degree now since they don't want to lose their favorites to early. Let's hope Deandre goes home this week but I wouldn't be crying if Joshua went bye bye either I don't like him at all and the judges are wrong about him.

Donkeyboy - Silver Moon

Posted on 20:05 by Unknown
Electro-pop band Donkeyboy have returned with their second album which starts off a little slow with the title track and their first single release from Silver Moon. The songs improve once you get to track four "Get Up" that has a nice airy feeling that reminds me of Owl City. The group continues to improve on the next track which is good because I was about to toss this one. The bands second single "Pull Of The Eye" has a vocoder chorus that is reminiscent of Eiffel 65. But the song isn't as good as anything on that bands most successful record.

The big issue with this entire project is that it sounds like that it came from the 80's but the generic 80's. At times I hear Erasure and I'm not a big fan of them at all. So in the end this is not for me but might be for you and if you like electro-pop that pretty much sounds stale and dated here is your last supper.

Cavo - This As Thieves

Posted on 19:47 by Unknown
Cavo are one of the bands that sound derivative of their genre. They write pop rock music but with a little harder edge not quite enough to make them hard rock. I compare them to the post grunge posers Creed and the emo tinged Daughtry as they sound like you could pick one guy from any of these groups drop them into another and nobody would be the wiser. Very cookie cutter corporate rock music that always has a place in the music world but brings nothing special or original to the party.

Thick As Thieves is an OK album in small doses but can't withstand a complete play front to back because too much of it sounds similar to the last song. If you put Chris Daughtry in to sing "War Within" you wouldn't be able to tell it was a different singer it's that close. Another band called Bleaker Ridge also fits in the genre of mediocrity but they do so at higher level with better song writing and understanding of writing a good hook, with that said Cavo lack all semblance of believability. I think they are more of a pop band than they want to admit because when you hear "Last Day" the band actually sound excited as if this is what they are supposed to sound closer to. This is one of the best songs on the album as well because it actually has some real emotion involved in it not just the wringing out of strained vocal emotion and dark turning chords.

As the band does their best imitation of Shinedown on the tracks "Run", "Circles" or "California" I just don't connect to them. When a great pop song comes on even though it is tailored probably professionally written or formulated there is a sense of fun and guilty pleasure feeling is brought out and that this where this band just miss-fires over and over again. If you enjoy meticulous production leaving music devoid of life then please give this album a listen but if you prefer something less calculated and more real look elsewhere. That doesn't mean this album bad it's just one that needs to be dispersed on mixed playlists or discs with other music to be effective.

All-American Rejects - Kids In The Street

Posted on 18:46 by Unknown
This band completely missed the boat on their new album. The songs are weak from structure to pop hook to being even drivel. When they were recording this record it sounds like they forgot who they were and wanted to be the indie version of some band that listens to way too much Jack Johnson. Even when they come up with a decent idea for a song it fails as with "Bleed Into Your Mind". The song goes absolutely nowhere as it climax's into some sort of Beatles psychedelic piece.

The band forget how to kick up their tempo's to something near a jog pace too often to make this anything but boring. If you want to hear total crap this album can do a fantastic job of showing in great detail how to come up short and how not to write songs. When they reach for Joe Jonas vocals on "Walk Over Me" I knew this album was done. There is the single "BeeKeeper's Daughter" which honestly I couldn't decide if I liked until I'd heard more than ten times and I don't hate it but I don't search my I-Pod for it or pull it out to play while rocking out at home.

There is much better music out right now than what Kids In The Street offers and so with that please go find something good to listen to because this is not it. This is also proven by the awful album art this book can be judged by its cover.

Madonna - MDNA

Posted on 20:30 by Unknown
Overall later era Madonna has been my favorite incarnation of her. She's been on fire since "Ray Of Light" and "Beautiful Stranger". Her last album was a good collection but it paled in comparison to the last few before it. Her return is welcomed as she usually teaches all the current crop how to make a modern dance record. Here on MDNA the mighty one uses more of Robyn's styled electronic pop than she would probably care to admit. The album starts off with the second single and the supposed to be controversial "Girl Gone Wild" as it is now tied to a lawsuit from the idiot who created the DVD series of similar name. Let's focus on the song itself and what we have is an ok pop song that lacks a true hook. The chorus isn't great even if the verse sections of the song have a nice dance floor groove.

Where the album shows some superiority of the pop diva's on the charts at this point is track two "Gang Bang". This song has all the chops a great electronic song needs to be successful. Madonna shows Lady GaGa how to Madonna with the song "Turn Up The Radio" that makes GaGa's crap like "Judas" and "Mary The Night" sound like third rate wanna be's and does so with great ease. The first single on the album is about as immediately memorable that she's ever written. The song not only has all its parts in place she includes one of the most original and awesome new pop diva's there is on it, being Nicki Minaj.

Madonna keeps the streak going with "Some Girls" that again sounds better the louder you play it. This is a club hit for sure and only time will prove that statement correct. The diva queen brings a little old school herself into the mix with "Superstar" all the while sounding completely fresh and current. MDNA is not only a brilliant record in 2012 it's one of Madonna's best and most complete albums to date. She just about hits a home-run on every track up until track eleven. Of course she drops a few duds like "Masterpiece" and she returns to her "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" era with "Falling Free" not my favorite song once again. It's as if she just could decide which songs to eliminate and chose not to making the album sixteen tracks when it should have been about twelve.

The song all the kids will want to download on I-tunes "I Fucked Up" is just ok with a good chorus. The albums last two tracks are good and bad with "B-Day Song" being the good and "Best Friend" being the bad. It's a little disappointing that album falls off the rails in back end to a point of near disaster. Madonna should have some big hits from this album and a few more dance chart hits as well but that doesn't excuse the crap she allowed on the back end of this record.

Shinedown - Amaryllis

Posted on 19:57 by Unknown
Shinedown profess their love of flowers in the title of their new album Amaryllis. As we all remember the last record kicked off with a straight up hard rock tune that was awesome. This album follows the same formula with "Adrenaline" it isn't as good but it is a good hard rock song that rocks balls out. The first single follows the tune and is a great song with a very positive and strong message about ant-bullying. It's one of the best songs with that message to date and is not only catchy it rocks. Reminds me a lot of the underrated Saigon Kick. The title track has a fantastic melody and is one of the bands best songs so far into their short career.

The big trouble with Shinedown is that they hit so big with their single "Second Chance" that they will be forced to chase that success for the rest of their existence by their record label. As the album plays through the band sounds more polished but more commercial as well. I was happy to hear the powerful and punchy "Enemies" which picked up the pace nicely. This song is one of those happy place songs for me. I like the stomping beat and rhyming lyrical patterns. The band shows a little more of their depth on this album than on the overtly commercial turn of Sound Of Madness and this album grabs me like their first two album did specifically like Us & Them which is still in my opinion a near masterpiece in the modern rock format.

The band again drop an incredibly well written polished song in "I'm Not Alright" then follow it with "Nowhere Kids" that pushes down the gas peddle picking up the pace. Two great songs in a row and lets be honest just over halfway through this album there isn't a bad song to be had yet. Brent Smith's vocals are so present and crisp on this album along with the incredible production of the drums and bass. The band have perfected their studio sound and I mean perfected because I don't think you can improve upon this level. I will admit the Elton John styled intro of "I'll Follow You" made me go hmm. The song has a very Black Crowes inspiration mixed into it as well which saves the song. The chorus is excellent and I actually ended up really liking the song.

As the album moves towards its eventual end it sort of runs out of gas a bit with "For My Sake" and "My Name (Wearing Me Out) both of which I would most likely hit the skip button when they begin from now on. I do like the closing power ballad "Through The Ghost" I hope this album does huge business for Shinedown because they deserve to be rewarded for all their growth and hard work putting together and album that overall kicks their biggest album's ass. Outside of "Devour" on their last album there is no doubt in my mind that Amaryllis is superior in every way and on every level.

Overkill - The Electric Age

Posted on 19:14 by Unknown
I've been waiting with bated breath for this album to appear and finally here it is! The album opens with "Come & Get It" which is a thrash-tastic headbanger. The song has a wicked viking breakdown chant which just puts a huge smile on my face while I drive the young children from the room with the volume dial steadily turning to the right. As with many thrash bands the production of an album is thin but on The Electric Age the band once again have a premier metal sound which is not only thick and full but clear and crisp. The songs all have the space to fill the room without being muddy or distorted.

As the album unfolds I am finding it a much more accessible listen than their last album Iron Bound which isn't saying they have changed anything to be commercial the songs are little less complicated overall and a more old school in their structure as well. The excellent "Wish You Were Dead" is one of the songs more reminiscent of past glories and then it is followed by a stomp-er called "Black Daze" that has very Pantera-esq groove metal feel. Both song completely different but sound comfortable and at home on the album. Even "Black Daze" has a very Dimebag solo in the song hitting the Pantera comparison home.

I have to admit I wasn't too impressed with "Save Yourself" as it came off weak and boring with little guitar pyro or a catchy chorus. The band begin to right the ship again with "Drop The Hammer Down" which is a bit overwrought. Once those two track are over with they get back to something a little more punchy and bouncy with "21st Century Man" that makes me want to thrash around my living-room again. The gang vocal chant in the song made me think of "Hey There Poser" from the Cycle Sluts From Hell song "I Wish You Were A Beer". The turnaround is complete with "Old Wounds, New Scars" that is about as ferocious Overkill can be considering Evil Ernie's vocal abilities oops Bobby Ellsworth can muster with his more nasal wickedness.

Overkill have once again recorded a really good album that has plenty to hit the pit to. The band nearly out do themselves with "All Over But The Shouting" which is as close you can get to Hello From Gutter era Overkill without just singing those songs. I have to say this is a thrash classic and a welcomed new song into my listening rotation. The lyrical content of The Electric Age's closing track is as good as the smoking thrash melody that is crushing you as you listen. The album starts strong sounds a little tired in the middle but then finishes incredibly strong. My ears thank you Overkill for finally giving me something new to listen to this year that isn't formulated, even though I like lots of pop. Heavy metal is my favorite genre of music and this satisfies my metal heart nicely.

My Darkest Days - Sick & Twisted Affair

Posted on 19:10 by Unknown
The sophomore effort is upon us and the question is can this band pull it together for an entire album this time around. The question is answered pretty much by track six of thirteen and it is once again no they cannot. They seem to have one really catchy up tempo tune and then surround it with pedestrian pop rock that isn't much different from Hedley or The Jonas Brothers. Sure the lyrics are a little dirty in topic but they sound like they were written by horny fifteen year old boys much of the time.

Now this music doesn't totally suck it just doesn't contain the sort of combustible ingredients that make this sort of dance rock fun and entertaining. Those sort of ingredients are what make this very bubblegum styled genre worth listening to and when it is lacking the music drowns in mediocrity. When they hit close to the right chord on "Casual Sex" the listener can get past the childish unmistakeably dumb lyrics. This is album being reviewed has a couple of mid-tempo songs that have something worth listening to about them in "Gone" and "Nature Of The Beast" which are the best of this collection adding a nod to the power ballad "Like Nobody Else (Mountain View Remix)" which I actually like.

Overall this album isn't nearly as good as the debut because it doesn't have a song in the same league as "Porn Star Dancing" overall maybe it is a better record but considering the debut had all the same issues that this sophomore effort does the band seem to be learning nothing. Hopefully after touring with the awesomeness of testosterone hard rocker Nickelback and the uber genius of Seether this year they will understand what it takes to crawl into the same pool that these groups rule and swim instead of drown.

P.S. : I really like the album cover it's awesome.
