Cavo - This As Thieves

Posted on 19:47 by Unknown
Cavo are one of the bands that sound derivative of their genre. They write pop rock music but with a little harder edge not quite enough to make them hard rock. I compare them to the post grunge posers Creed and the emo tinged Daughtry as they sound like you could pick one guy from any of these groups drop them into another and nobody would be the wiser. Very cookie cutter corporate rock music that always has a place in the music world but brings nothing special or original to the party.

Thick As Thieves is an OK album in small doses but can't withstand a complete play front to back because too much of it sounds similar to the last song. If you put Chris Daughtry in to sing "War Within" you wouldn't be able to tell it was a different singer it's that close. Another band called Bleaker Ridge also fits in the genre of mediocrity but they do so at higher level with better song writing and understanding of writing a good hook, with that said Cavo lack all semblance of believability. I think they are more of a pop band than they want to admit because when you hear "Last Day" the band actually sound excited as if this is what they are supposed to sound closer to. This is one of the best songs on the album as well because it actually has some real emotion involved in it not just the wringing out of strained vocal emotion and dark turning chords.

As the band does their best imitation of Shinedown on the tracks "Run", "Circles" or "California" I just don't connect to them. When a great pop song comes on even though it is tailored probably professionally written or formulated there is a sense of fun and guilty pleasure feeling is brought out and that this where this band just miss-fires over and over again. If you enjoy meticulous production leaving music devoid of life then please give this album a listen but if you prefer something less calculated and more real look elsewhere. That doesn't mean this album bad it's just one that needs to be dispersed on mixed playlists or discs with other music to be effective.
