This topic could be debated by many about many but really in the end the conclusion can only come to one band. They were fronted by an unmistakable voice which sang some of the greatest song ever written in any genre. The band also had one of the best drummers to ever walk on planet earth and is completely underrated if not completely ignored. There sound was dynamic as it merged many styles together all creating a classic catalog that is at times as good as the biggest of the biggest bands ever The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Everyone should know I'm speaking of the Guess Who and if you thought otherwise bang your head into the nearest wall. Tragically Hip fans please jump in front of a speeding truck 18 wheeler preferred.
The Guess Who only wrote "American Woman" and is the first number one song on the American music charts by a Canadian group. They also had some other notable hits "These Eyes" and their excellent and maybe the original mashup "No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature". Now other Canadian bands have come and gone but I don't believe any of them had the major impact on the Canadian music scene like the one The Guess Who had. The band is one of the major acts that helped form the Canadian recording industry creating a pathway for all who came afterwards. Without their success worldwide the gifted artists that Canada has always had a knack for creating might have never found success. Sure you can argue April Wine or Rush for greatest Canadian band but without The Guess Who their might be no Rush or April Wine.
Now go listen to some great Canuck rock (NO HIP ALLOWED)!
